One-Click Recipes on Fresh Direct
While I have definitely had my complaints with Fresh Direct’s level of service (as have many others), I have always respected the obvious care and attention that they have paid to the design and usability of their website. In fact, I often cite Fresh Direct as an example of a very usable and innovative design. Unfortunately, the “real-world” aspects of their service — i.e. the quality of their products, delivery and customer service — have been so uneven, and occasionally horrid, that I have stopped ordering from them almost completely. That may be about to change.
The site’s new One-Click Recipes function allows users to browse for recipes in a variety of categories: by author, cookbook, theme, ingredient, etc. Bear in mind that these are real published recipes in well-known cookbooks such as The New Basics and Staff Meals (two staples of my cookbook shelf), not hit-or-miss, user-submitted content. Once you locate a recipe you want to try, the site automatically creates a shopping cart that contains the right amounts of the ingredients you’ll need — including an ingenius “things you may already have” section that allows you to add stuff like Olive Oil, Salt, etc. that most cooks have in their pantries. This subtlety is, to me, really the evidence of someone thinking through the scenario carefully. The site editors have selected the items that they think you probably won’t have and they have prefilled the quantities for these. For the items you probably will have, they include the item in a separate section of the cart, with a zero quantity. Tidy.
Of course, none of this matters if, once your order arrives, the meat is spoiled and the Diet Coke has exploded all over the melted ice cream. But it is dang convenient and is a good enough reason for me to give Fresh Direct another try.

Thanksgiving nightmare…
This may be the last time I use Fresh Direct. Two weeks ago they started using banners on the site which urged you to order a Fresh Turkey now or you would be without one and you must choose delivery on 11/21 or 11/22. I ordered on 11/10! Today my husband heard a story on NPR about Pecan Pie and urged me to make one – (contains corn syrup – ick)… Anyway when I placed my order most of the items I previously chose under threat of punishment (if you cancel an order after 11/19 you will be responsible to pay for half etc.) I add the pecans and the syrup (ick) and voila – no Turkey available until 11/28, no cranberries, no mushrooms – until 11/28… I made a call and sent an e-mail but without the proper response which would be of course we have your turkey and other items – this will be my last time ordering… Problem with my neighborhood – Gristedes – just bought a stick of butter there (for pumpkin tortelli w/sage and butter sauce) and it had mold on it – I have never seen moldy butter before! It may be D’agostino’s for us after this (I’m sure they’re happy to hear!) I really love the convenience of FD – you can order any time (well sort of) and get it delivered when wanted…

Must eat crow and Turkey! While no one called or responded to my e-mail – Fresh Direct delivered everything on my order – most importantly the Turkey… Wanted to make sure that I followed up my rant in the event someone else comes along as I did…This Thanksgiving I’m thankful for FD the moldy butter incident was really disgusting and offputting… Guess I should post complaints about Gristedes somewhere online!
