Home… Again.

Here’s one solution to the ever-popular “do we need a ‘home’ link in the main navigation?” dilemma… Amazon provides an informative “homepage” rollover state on their logo — just in case you weren’t sure what would happen if you clicked there.

Amazon Home Rollover

How much does this help? In a sense it goes to the question of user confidence. Many people will suspect or guess that the logo is the link to the homepage – especially in the absence of a clear ‘home’ link elsewhere. These people may mouse over the logo and will be glad to have their guess validated by the rollover message. It will make them more confident in their choice and therefore perhaps marginally more likely to click. But if I have no idea that this option exists, am I likely to discover this rollover at all? Probably not. So the Catalyst expert usability opinion of this function? It’s better than nothing!
