Twitterfeed: Is this thing on?

I was a Twitter skeptic at first, but I’ll admit to using it, ahem, a lot now. But Twitter is a cruel mistress. Sometimes I find myself hating it for the same reasons that I loved it the day before. For example, the 140 character limit. It’s a basically arbitrary constraint borne out of the original assumption that the service would be largely SMS – based (SMS limits are 160 chars, so 140 leaves 20 chars for the username). But with most people accessing Twitter from the web, or from Twitter apps, there is really no reason for the limit anymore. Or is there? Sometimes 140 feels completely inadequate for making even a small point or comment.

Other times, I’m grateful for the small container to neatly hold a small (or let’s say “compact”) idea.

I have also noticed, though, that CoFactors (this blog) has been getting short shrift. We were never exactly on a daily publication schedule, but my attention has definitely shifted away from “macro” blogging in favor of “micro” blogging on Twitter. So, in an attempt to achieve convergence in my own small way, I’m trying out Twitterfeed. In theory, this will allow me to bleat in 140 characters on Twitter directly, or squeeze out a few more characters here on CoFactors and still publish an abbreviated version on Twitter. For example, some time in the next 30 minutes, this post should show up in my Twitter feed

We’ll see how this works out – wish me luck.

I think the connectivity with people is based on the fact that we live our lives very fast. From day to day we like to get news on the go in a compact mode. Twitter satisfies this need to connect with people, sometimes people we’ll never have a chance to meet in person, on a very minuscule yet important way. It can greatly impact our days by reading updates from successful people, family, friends without having to spend an inordinate amount of time catching up with them or reading anything more than a few words if we don’t want to.
